SEO Warnings
This article, and the ones to come, will give you insider information concerning the world of search engine optimization, search engine marketing, search engine optimization companies and just a few of the horror stories that this industry produces. SEO is a business, not really like any other business, found today. It is an obscure niche market that is filled with all types of people who claim they are the best at obtaining top positions on Google, Yahoo, MSN and all the other major search engines. I will venture a guess that there are not many people who actually know how to go about the process of nailing a top spot on the information network.
SEO is a system whereby you are promoting websites. In true fashion, this should be a very straight forward business. It is not. After talking with person after person who has literally been taken to the bank, it comes necessary to start writing articles about the potential dangers that you must be aware of before hiring any seo company or firm, to handle your online promotions. Honestly, true SEO should not be thought of as a hazy mystery, that only the proud few are able to accomplish. I know for a fact that if you give people the right education in the processes found within search engine optimization, they can do the job very effectively.
There are many search engine optimization companies found on Google, Yahoo, MSN and all the other major search engines. Some are very qualified and upstanding, but a great many are simply fraudulent and unsavory, and are out to steal your money and give you no real value at all. Within this series of insightful articles, you will begin to understand the necessary steps that you need to be made fully aware of, before you spend your money. You need to know the right questions to ask an SEO firm. You should become at least fairly familiar with the terms and how they apply to your business.
A couple of years ago, I started an SEO campaign for a gentleman who had paid an extravagant amount of money, I am talking tens of thousands of dollars, by a so-called reputable webmaster, to build a marketing site for his business. He called me to view the site and begin the process of site analysis to determine if that site was properly setup to obtain a position on Google. Honestly, the site was very well organized, but sadly lacking in the correct title, metatag and high traffic keywords. In other words, the site did not stand a chance of anyone ever viewing the site, much less, making money from that site. This man had put an extreme amount of money into this business, but the webmaster was holding him hostage. Let me explain this further.
I told him that unless we changed the title, meta and the keywords, the site had no chance of any type of recognition on Google. He asked me to contact the site designer, which I did, and ask him to make the necessary changes. These changes were only going to take this company under two minutes to change. I made the call and explained who I was, and what needed to be done. This guy told me that he would be glad to make the necessary changes, but it would cost an additional $2500! Follow along here with me. I was going to construct the title, meta and keywords in html format. All this guy had to do was ftp that information into the new site. This process literally takes seconds to accomplish, but he wanted an additional $2500 to make that change. This will give you an idea of how unscrupulous web designers can, and will, hold you for extortion money concerning your site.
The first rule of thumb here is that you should never give anyone ultimate control over your website. That site is your life blood on the Internet. Relinquishing that control to someone can spell disaster for you in the long term. Always keep control of your domains. Granted, you may give that SEO person the login so that changes can me made, but you will always have the control of making that site inaccessible should trouble arise.
Each of the stories within this article will not be fiction. These are actual people that I have had phone contact with over the years in seo. If you are going to hire a web designer, or an SEO Master, you should take responsibility for knowing some of the techniques so that you can ask logical questions. If you do not get a straight answer, then you have the option of saying "no thanks." and just walking away.
Stay tuned for more in this series called SEO Warnings. These might just save you time, money and stress down the road.
